College Woes

Graduating with a degree in Journalism is so terrifying these days. I have one month to go and I’m legit scared. Why? Because journalists have to know how to do everything now . I feel like that awkward, yet talented, one-man band you see in a random city plaza, holding a guitar with a harmonica attached to it, and playing a congo drum with my foot; desperately waiting for a dollar bill to show up in my guitar case. I have absolutely no specialty but somehow I’m familiar with how to do everything: write, edit, shoot video, edit video, take photos, edit photos, write broadcast scripts, deliver broadcast scripts, along with a myriad of online media skills that anyone with a facebook/blog/twitter knows how to do. And I’m not even sure I can get a job in the field I want with all of these skills. Still ,I’m desperately waiting for the dollar bills to be dropped in my guitar case.

God, what an original post right? College student freaks out about finding a job after college. Story of everyone’s life.

2010 Academy Award observations

I don’t care enough to write a long-winded post bashing the Oscars, so I’m gonna break it down in bullets:

I absolutely didn’t like anyone’s dress last night. Sarah Jessica Parker looked like was wearing a nightgown. That one chick from Up in the Air looked like she was wearing one of those fitted sheets that go on the bottom of the bed and you can’t figure the damn thing out because of all the elastic bits on the edges. It looked like someone barfed all over Rachael McAdams’ dress. Miley Cyrus forgot to put her dress on over the bustier.
Why wasn’t Farrah Fawcett commemorated on the people-who-bit-the-dust-this-year slide show? She died on the same day as Michal Jackson, and he was most definitely on there.
Good job rushing the real talent off the stage once they recieve their award. Then make more time for the big super stars and the idiot hosts who make comments about the big super stars.
Why did George Clooney get so much screen time? He isn’t that great. And why did he have such a bad attitude the whole time?
I know this show is live and all, but there were so many awkward time lapses and flubbing over lines (I’m looking at you Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart)
In general, I felt like the show was painfully awkward and almost embarassing to watch. Like, get that person off the stage already……
Good win for Kathryn Bigelow (even though I haven’t seen The Hurtlocker yet)

Overall: I don’t know why I wasted my time watching this.

Uggs and sweatpants. Uggs and leggings. Uggs and sun dress. Uggs and anything.

I will never understand the Uggs phenomenon. These shoes aren’t waterproof, but people still wear them in the rain and snow. I guess they’re warm, but people still wear them when it’s 85 degrees out (see current spring ads where they fit in just perfect on the beach). Apparently, they are “comfortable.” However, I can think of 1253564598 other shoes that are comfortable and don’t look like you skinned a yetti for your footwear.

Also read earlier that 90% of women with HIV/AIDS in D.C. are black women.

These statistics are unbelievable. I’m not sure people understand the seriousness of HIV/AIDS. It is terminal. It breaks down your immune system to the point you can’t protect yourself against basic sickness. And all because you can’t put on a goddamn condom or are busy injecting drugs into your body.Universities give out condoms for free, clinics give them out for free, a 3 pack at 7-11 is like $5.

I blame abstinence-only education. And junkies.

1) Because an Ivy League education just isn’t enough, I guess.

2) I’m clearly too middle class to understand this joke.

NAACP’s new chairman

Roslyn M. Brock is the new chairman of the NAACP. Krissah Thompson, reporter for The Wahsington Post ( and who I have had the pleasure of interviewing for a class project), reports that “for the first time in the NAACP’s history, both its president and chairman are too young to have personally experienced legalized segregation.”

I just thought this was interesting and wanted to share. And I know that I’m not the first person to ask this, but, now that segregation is no longer an issue how relevent is the NAACP? Are they obsolete now?

Graduation equals Doomsday

Highschool Graduation w/ my sis, 2006

“What are you going to do after you graduate?” is my least favorite question these days.

I’m realizing that any questions about your future are only exciting to answer when you have a definite plan of action. For example:

“Moving to Costa Rica to be a teacher”

“I have a job lined up with NBC”

“I got accepted to Georgetown, so it looks like I’ll be going to grad school!”

These are things I wish I could say but don’t have the resources, or maybe the guts, that would allow me to achieve any of these. I wouldn’t even know where to start if I wanted to seriously pursue spending some time in Costa Rica, or anywhere far away and tropical after I graduate. And it’s hard to apply for grad school when I can’t even afford the application fee. And there’s no way I’m qualified to work for NBC.

Maybe my goals and aspirations are too high. Or maybe the problem is that my motivation isn’t as high as my aspirations. The more I think about what I want/need to do to prepare for my life after graduation the more I want to retreat to my bed and sleep for 10 hours, and then maybe make a To-Do list about all of the things I need to do.

I swear it shouldn’t be this scary to graduate. It should be exciting. But I am almost dreading it.

You leave your cell phone out at the table.

Ok, this really annoys me. I don’t understand why you need to have little side conversations via text while we are sharing a meal/coffee/whatever. Am I that boring? I can understand if we’re at a party and things get quiet and awkward, then a good ol’ T-Pain app. gets shit started. Other than that, just don’t.
